The Association
Background:
Friends of the Tay Watershed (FoTW) is a non-profit, charitable association, dedicated to preserving and enhancing the health of the Tay River Watershed. It was founded in mid-2001 and obtained incorporated non-profit, charitable status later that year. Its activities to date have been guided by the Mission Statement and objectives listed below, which emphasize a focus on following up the recommendations of the Tay River Watershed Plan. That plan was developed between 1998 and 2002 by a community- and stakeholder-based Round Table, under the guidance of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) and published later that year by the RVCA.(click here to access the Plan).
Mission statement:
The Friends of the Tay Watershed deliver activities, and cooperate with other organizations with complementary interests, to ensure
the health of the water and related natural resources of the Tay Watershed for present and future generations.
Objectives:
The FoTW will involve landowners, water users, and other interested parties in programs aimed at improving the health of the Tay River Watershed.
It will work to:
- educate the public and watershed stakeholders on the benefits of
maintaining and improving wildlife habitat, recreation, and water quality and
quantity in the Tay Watershed;
- carry forward the recommendations of the Tay River Watershed
Management Plan ( published in the spring of 2002);
- promote the coordination of water protection and improvement activities
from the range of organizations involved in watershed management.
FoTW Policy Statement on Climate Change
Climate change is expected to bring substantial changes to ecological systems around the world, including the Tay Watershed. The Friends of the Tay Watershed will develop, endorse, support, recommend and implement actions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change within the watershed for the health of the watershed and its inhabitants.
