Lake Management Planning Program

    Lake Management Planning Program

The Tay Watershed Lake Management Planning Program
    was a collaborative initiative of:
The Friends of the Tay Watershed Association Otty Lake Association
Rideau Valley Conservation Authority Tay Valley Township
Lanark County Stewardship Council Mississippi Valley Conservation

The collaborators wish to thank the following organizations for their generous support of the Lake Management Planning Program:
    The Ontario Trillium Foundation
The TD Friends of the Environment Foundation
    The Rideau Lakes Environmental Foundation
    Lanark County Community Stewardship Council

The objective of the Lake Management Planning Program is to provide information and guidance through the Program Manager, to the extent that the budget allows, to all lake groups in Tay Valley Township and the Tay River Watershed, for the purpose of developing Lake Management Plans. Current funding will allow the Lake Management Planning Program to assist in the development of three finalized lake management plans over the next three years in addition to providing lake management planning information to all interested lakes.

    This program will provide:

      1. volunteer training and information workshops and seminars, complemented by printed technical materials and customized expert advice and guidance to individual lakes,
      2. a standard planning template package to enable lake volunteers to carry out the first stages of lake plan strategy and priority development, and
      3. an outreach component to develop awareness amongst residents and policy makers of the need and benefits arising from sub-watershed planning.

The Program is intended to address the concerns of many lake groups in the Tay watershed region that have recognized that lake management planning is important to ensure the long-term health of their lakes - but do not have either the necessary knowledge or funds for such a technical undertaking.

The development of sub-watershed lake plans is a priority area of work for our association, which provides umbrella support to organizations in the Tay watershed. It also addresses one of the most important recommendations emanating from the original Tay River Watershed Management Plan, on which our association focused its activities for many years.
