8th Annual ‘Tay Watershed Discovery Evening’ –

Open House and Exhibition

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Royal Canadian Legion Hall, Perth, 6:30-9:00pm

This is an early notice of our 8th Annual public open house and exhibition – the ‘Tay Watershed Discovery Evening’, on November 4, at the Perth Legion, starting at 6:30pm (presentations at 7:40pm).

Please mark your calendar and plan to participate!  There will be something of interest for everyone –water resources, environment, celebrating the watershed history, recreation, antiques, and, even, local economic development.

This evening features the largest water and environment exhibition in the Perth area, with displays from over 30 organisations.  Some new exhibitors this year include: Ardoch Algonquin First Nations; Carleton University Honours student’s shoreline report; A2A (Algonquin to Adirondack Assn); Canadian Museum of Nature; Nature Lover’s Bookstore; Book Nook; Adventure (kayak) Tours, and many others.  Amongst the many subjects covered in the exhibition are: the status of rural and Perth water supplies; new programs and legislation to protect water supplies; programs to upgrade residential wells and septic systems; assistance for developing lake management planning programs; mining exploration issues; shoreline & wetland preservation; Tay Canal 175th Anniversary;  and more.

The evening presentations will be opened by the Hon. James Bartleman, former Lt. Governor of Ontario.  Wendy Laut, Deputy Mayor of Perth, will announce some of the activities being considered for the Tay Canal’s 175th Anniversary celebrations in 2009 – which is the theme of this watershed evening.

In line with the evening theme, we are pleased to have as the keynote speaker the Superintendent of the Rideau Canal, Gordon Giffin – on the “Rideau and Tay Canals – Navigating the World Stage (and what it means for this region).  Following the Canals’ designation as a World Heritage site, and the Rideau’s coincidental 175th Anniversary last year, the entire Rideau system including the Tay Canal is beginning to receive international attention.  This could bring substantial benefits to our communities, and, perhaps, challenges.  Mr. Giffin’s talk will review what these results could mean for our area – and what might be done to profit from this.

You will also be interested in:

ü     Our celebrity auction, following its popularity last year, will be an antique auction! - featuring Perth Town Crier, Brent MacLaren, and offering eight attractive antique items, which will be of particular interest (watch our website for a list and description),

ü     and, the announcement and presentation of the Friends’ Annual Watershed and Environment Awards.

Exhibits are open from 6:30 to 7:45 pm, with refreshments.

Keynote presentation at 8:20 pm.

Please come and bring your family – and tell your friends.

There is no charge.
